Week 9 Recap

by CBS Fantasy Journalist

Happy Valley Violence took yet another hit to the loss column, while Miami Muffdivers won their 7th in a row. Meanwhile, New Chester Thorobreds beat Philadelphia Griffins within an inch of their lives as part of this week’s exciting action.

Not Even Close

In a week where there were three blowouts, this was the biggest. New Chester Thorobreds left Philadelphia Griffins wondering where it all went wrong, winning 81.5 to 27. The win brings New Chester Thorobreds’ record to 6 – 2, while dropping Philadelphia Griffins to 3 – 5.

Cooper Kupp has been coming through for New Chester Thorobreds all year, and this week was no different. Although New Chester Thorobreds had several players step up in the win, Kupp was the best of the bunch, recording 19 points.(1) That makes it seven straight games where he has outperformed the league average wide receiver. He earned 128 total yards on Sunday, more than half of which came from this 69-yard touchdown.

Meanwhile, Marcus Mariota was the main culprit in Philadelphia Griffins’ loss, scoring no points.2 Coach Nicholas Fisher found out why he was available on the waiver wire this week.

Although Philadelphia Griffins lost this game, on the bright side, New Chester Thorobreds were the hardest test they will face for a while. Their next two games are against sub .500 teams, starting with Mercer Mustangs next week. Mercer Mustangs won’t have Mark Andrews available to start in that contest.

As for New Chester Thorobreds, they will match up with Dallas Armadillos next week.

Cruising

This was expected to be a blowout, and Frelinghuysen Froglickers didn’t disappoint. They stomped all over Orange Co. Beach Dudes 101 to 60. The win is part of a larger trend for Frelinghuysen Froglickers. In each of the last three weeks they have scored more points than the week before.

The win gets Frelinghuysen Froglickers back to .500 with a 4 – 4 record. The loss drops Orange Co. Beach Dudes to the last spot in the Engle division at 2 – 7.

Dallas Goedert led a very balanced group of five overperformers for Frelinghuysen Froglickers this week, racking up 17 points.1 That was the most that any tight end collected this week. He only missed one of his nine targets for an even 100 yards (and this clean touchdown) on Thursday.

Meanwhile, Nyheim Hines loomed large in the loss for Orange Co. Beach Dudes, scoring zero points. Hines has now failed to top the league average running back in seven straight games. He was quiet in his debut as a Bill, he failed to catch his only target and his only yards came from an 18-yard punt return.

Frelinghuysen Froglickers won this game despite, rather than because of, Coach David Zilberfarb’s lineup moves. They went with Mike Gesicki over the higher ranked Cordarrelle Patterson.

This terrible decision took a 14 point chunk out of Frelinghuysen Froglickers’ final score. Having cost their team 31 points total, Coach Zilberfarb are the worst game-day coach in the league so far this season.

Mix for Six (Five Times)

It’s not that hard to win when you get the league’s top performance for the season, and Joe Mixon delivered that performance. Joe Mixon led the way as Keystone Longfellows made it past Dallas Armadillos, winning 90.5 to 83. Mixon overperformed his expectations by more than any other player. He erupted for five touchdowns on Sunday, so many he had to count to keep track after scoring his last.

Keystone Longfellows also got a better-than-expected performance from Kenneth Walker III, who beat his projections by 9.6 points. Keystone Longfellows is still perfect in games where Walker III overperforms, going 3 – 0.

Meanwhile, D’Onta Foreman and D’Andre Swift were double trouble for Dallas Armadillos, together tallying only 3.5 points. Foreman’s momentum from last week’s 30 point performance apparently didn’t carry over.

Dallas Armadillos wound up with their high point total courtesy of four overperformers. Patrick Mahomes scored 32 points to pace the group. Showtime topped all but three players this week with that performance.(3)

The win brings Keystone Longfellows’ record to 6 – 2 – 1, while dropping Dallas Armadillos to 4 – 4.

Leading the Charge

Big Oregon Bang got this win with a little bit in reserve, earning a 55 to 46.5 victory over Happy Valley Violence. Big Oregon Bang won despite having the 4th lowest scoring total in the league this week.

The defeat is the 5th in a row for Happy Valley Violence, which leaves them with a 3 – 6 record. The win brings Big Oregon Bang to 5 – 3.

Big Oregon Bang relied heavily on Travis Etienne, who recorded 22 points. Etienne set his high mark for the season with that effort. This touchdown was his second of the day, making Sunday’s game his first with more than one.

Meanwhile, there’s no pointing fingers in Happy Valley Violence’s loss as they failed all over the place. They had six underperformers, with Marquez Valdes-Scantling (0.5 points) being the worst. Valdes-Scantling’s 0.5 points made him the worst starter on his team for the 2nd time this season.

Next week will see Big Oregon Bang taking on the 4 – 4 Frelinghuysen Froglickers. Frelinghuysen Froglickers have been racking up the points recently, posting three straight 80+ point games. The matchup will feature the two top RB’s in the league, as Nick Chubb meets up with Derrick Henry.

The road ahead for Happy Valley Violence gets much easier as they face league doormat Orange Co. Beach Dudes. Happy Valley Violence might be feeling extra confident about that game, as Orange Co. Beach Dudes limps in on a six game losing streak.

On Edge

Miami Muffdivers started week nine with the best record in the league, and finished week nine with the best record in the league. They just slipped by Chicago Mud, 79.5 to 79. No team this season has had to suffer a closer loss than the one Chicago Mud endured this week.

The win makes it seven in a row for Miami Muffdivers, which brings their record to 8 – 1. The loss drops Chicago Mud’s record to 2 – 6.

Running backs Kenyan Drake and Austin Ekeler were the prime movers for Miami Muffdivers, scoring 20 and 17.5 points, respectively. Drake’s 20 point performance made him the top performer on Miami Muffdivers for the first time this year. He went straight up the gut from three yards out for his second touchdown of the night.

Meanwhile, Devin Singletary was clearly the weakest link for Coach Ronnie Feldman and the gang as he delivered 2 points.(2) That makes it five straight games where Singletary has underperformed the league average running back.

On the coaching front, the difference in tactical skill showed this week. Coach Pat landy did his part in the victory, setting a perfect lineup. That took more than just following the experts’ advice. He started Kenyan Drake instead of Clyde Edwards-Helaire, despite the experts’ prediction that Edwards-Helaire should have played.

This decision boosted Miami Muffdivers’ final score by 19.5 points, which was the difference in the game. This is the first time all season that Coach Landy has set a perfect lineup.

Coach Feldman has to place a big part of the blame for this loss on himself. He left Darren Waller in the lineup, despite the fact that he was a guaranteed zero points.

That cost his team 1 point, which cost his team the game. Still, this is the first time this year that Coach Feldman’s decisions have cost his team points.

Too Hot to Handle

After coming up with all of 0.5 points last week, Davante Adams came up clutch this week. Adams was the key component as Mercer Mustangs demolished Connecticut Wildcats, winning 63 to 32.5. His 28 points were the most of any wide receiver this week. He caught the ball six times for 88 yards and a touchdown (in the first quarter!), going on to finish the game with 146 yards and two TDs.

Meanwhile, Coach Ron Yeany will have a hard time pinning the blame for this loss on any particular player. Aaron Jones was the worst of an eight man group of underperformers on Connecticut Wildcats, notching only 2 points.(2) Drake London has to share in some of the blame as well, coming up with 4.4 fewer points than he was expected to. It’s yet another disappointing day for London, who has now underperformed the experts’ predictions in six straight games.

The win brings Mercer Mustangs’ record to 2 – 6, while dropping Connecticut Wildcats to 3 – 6.
